Vitamins & Supplements
Now, I have to admit I’m not really a fan of vitamins and supplements, preferring to supply my players with a high quality nutritious diet and let my body and metabolism decide what it needs.
I also like to think I have a healthy scepticism, which applies to both modern drugs and herbal treatments.
So, like any good manager, I research the evidence and make my own mind up, before deciding to take any medication, be it herbal, nutraceutical or pharmaceutical.
Here are a few supplements I might consider if diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid for diabetic neuropathy
Found in red meat.
Dose: 600-800mg daily.

Chromium to improve glucose control.
Found in wheat germ, brewers yeast and meats.
Dose: 200 – 400 up daily

Magnesium – essential for glucose metabolism.
Found in green leafy veg, nuts, seeds and chocolate.
Dose. 300-700mg daily

Manganese – Important for glucose metabolism. Low levels associated with diabetes.
Found in nuts, legumes, tea and coffee.
Dose. 30mg
Precaution. Can cause hypersensitivity reaction.

Vitamin B12 for diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy.
Found in eggs, dairy, fish and meat.
Dose: 1000 – 3000 ug daily
Precaution. Can cause diarrhoea and itching.

Vitamin C to reduce glucose levels
Found in citrus fruits, berries, broccoli and peppers.
Dose: 1g daily
